Name, job, part of the San Francisco Bay Area you live in
Anna Nguyen, Senior Security Risk Program Specialist, San Francisco
When did you first come to the Bay and what’s the backstory there?
My fiance (now husband) moved to SF two years ago, March 2016. We were looking for our next adventure and considered doing the typical Aussie move to London to spend two years working and travelling. BUT I actually got a job offer in SF with a consulting firm and we thought, what the heck! Let’s go to the U.S.A!
Hardest thing about moving here?
Leaving my family and friends behind and the “unknown.” I really didn’t know much about living and working in the USA as no one I knew has done it before. It took a little while for me to get settled and really feel at home.
Favorite Bay Area memory to date?
All the weekend and day trips to Napa and Sonoma. WINE!
What impact has being Australian had on your life here? In dating? In work?
Being an Aussie has certainly made socialising a lot easier. Everybody loves the accent and wants to know my backstory. From a work perspective, I think I have been able to bring a different perspective to various scenarios and have definitely brought the Aussie culture into the office.
Most American thing you’ve experienced in your time here?
Superbowl Sunday – Spending the day eating, drinking and watching the Superbowl. I’m not even a sports fan and don’t really understand the game but had a great day playing drinking games and eating wings.
Best advice for anyone who is thinking of coming over?
Just do it! If you’re thinking about it, just do it. There are so many unique opportunities here in the Bay Area that you just don’t get back at home. There’s so much innovation, you just feel like you’re a part of something bigger.
